Development Manager, Events and Activations


ABOUT THE ROLE, as the Events & Activation Development Manager you will work closely with the Northern and Southern California Executive Directors and other development staff in the Playworks in the California Hub to chart the growth and strategic response to an ever-increasing demand for the organization’s programs and services.  In this role, you are directly responsible for corporate and grant funded activations at our local schools and communities. This includes primary responsibility for the coordination, and implementation of activations and corporate engagements in Northern and Southern California. This position is a key resource in advancing Playworks’ goals relative to building strong, multi-year relationships with corporate partners in California. You will play a significant role in the corporate revenue generation portion of Playworks Californias’ nearly $350,000 development target. You will be a collaborative and innovative leader for the Playworks California Hub, with an understanding of strength-based organizational culture, passion about Playworks’ mission and a commitment to education and youth development.

This is a remote position, with Southern and Northern California in-person event attendance required.

Specifically, you will manage Northern and Southern California Events and Activations in the following ways:

Corporate Engagements 

  • Manage and deliver high-quality implementation of Northern and Southern California corporate engagements. 
  • Develop and manage master calendar for all regional corporate engagements.
  • Coordinate engagements requested by corporate partners. 
  • Planning, day-of support and operational lead for corporate engagement events such as Play Days, Corporate Recess, Park on the Move activations in Socal 
  • Lead for grant funded activations, including single day sport team activations at Playworks Partner schools and developmental sport pilot program 
  • Lead cross-department coordination  to secure support for corporate engagement implementation.
  • Ensure timely and effective follow up post-engagements. Coordinating with Sr. Development Associate to convert engagement attendees into Playworks supporters.
  • Envision and pilot new opportunities for innovative corporate engagement.
  • Generate leads for and ensure successful implementation of corporate engagements.

Fundraising Events

  • Lead the planning and implementation of regional fundraising events including all project planning while driving towards stated outcomes. (ex: Spark Play in Norcal)
  • Work with the local Regional Leads, Regional Boards, and Regional Development team members to secure corporate sponsorships and individual gifts.
  • Maintain event timelines, guest lists, registration materials, waivers, releases, evaluations, testimonials, etc.

Corporate Partnership Management  

  • Cultivate and steward strong, multi-year corporate partnerships.
  • Support implementation of a multi-year corporate development plan for the region.
  • Conduct research and outreach to develop new corporate relationships. 
  • Support stewardship relationships with prospective and current corporate funders.
  • Attend, assist and represent Playworks at various key fundraising. events/functions, speaking engagements, tours, and other programs in an effort to build Playworks’ visibility in the corporate sector.
  • Conduct site visits with corporate leaders, as needed.

General Operations

  • Create monthly fundraising reports and other database reports as needed.
  • Continually update and correct database records.
  • Support all follow-up tasks including cultivation of event participants through lead generation, Salesforce entries, emailing, calling, and developing photo albums. 
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 3-5 years of relevant professional experience in communications, fundraising, event planning, and / or content marketing.
  • Strong knowledge of effective fundraising strategies including individual donor cultivation, corporate employee volunteer programs and event production.
  • Demonstrated success in using writing and social media / videos to engage key audiences, especially in varied voices. Writing samples will be required.
  • Experience managing press requests, writing press releases, and pitching stories.
  • Ability to thrive in an entrepreneurial, team-oriented, and mission driven environment that places a strong value on collaboration.
  • Passion and enthusiasm for language, writing, persuasion, and connecting meaningfully with varied constituencies.
  • Demonstrated success in building strong relationships among teams; working collaboratively and thoughtfully.
  • Ability to write and work under tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment while keeping a keen eye on detail and accuracy.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office. Knowledge of Google Apps and Salesforce a strong plus!
  • Self-motivation and the ability to set strategic priorities and manage multiple simultaneous tasks under minimal supervision in an organized, effective and efficient manner while meeting aggressive deadlines and maintaining positive relationships over time.
  • The strongest candidate will have the demonstrated ability to maintain poise and demeanor appropriate to portray an image of professionalism as defined by Playworks and possess a documented history of successful fundraising, communications, and event-related nonprofit experience. 
  • Although this position is supporting events across California, the majority of the events are within Southern California. Southern California residents preferred with occasional travel to Northern California.
  • Regular travel throughout the Southern California region is required. Travel will be widely dispersed across the region, therefore daily access to reliable transportation is required.
  • If a Playworks employee is required to drive a vehicle for work related purposes (not commuting purposes) the employee must complete an authorization form and provide us with evidence of valid, current driver's license and proof of liability/collision/property damage insurance with minimum coverage of $50,000 each accident/ $100,000 each occurrence.

  • At Playworks, our compensation takes into consideration internal pay equity, geographic pay differential and robust external market data. We highly value transparency and equity within compensation and therefore are committed to adhering to established compensation pay points. The salary for this position is: $71,700 (SF Bay Area) or $68,200 (all other locations)
  • A comprehensive benefits package, including medical, dental, vision, disability, life insurance, 401(k) and 3% employer match, employee funded pre-tax health and child care spending accounts.
  • Generous Flex PTO policy with paid sick and holiday leave.
  • Remote position with Southern and Northern California in-person event attendance required of role.
